Farewell Message from Caring Campus President/CEO
Dr. Brad Phillips

Dear IEBC and Caring Campus Community,

Caring Campus has been the most meaningful work of my career.

What began as a vision to create more welcoming, connected, and student-centered institutions has grown into a national movement transforming campus cultures nationwide. Seeing colleges and universities increase student retention, persistence, and completion rates – while also igniting renewed satisfaction and purpose among staff, faculty, and administrators – has been deeply rewarding.

This journey began in 1998 with my creation of the California Partnership for Student Success (Cal-PASS), a statewide collaborative data system designed to better understand and support students from kindergarten through higher education. Those efforts expanded with the founding of the Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC) in 2008, and, ultimately, the launch of Caring Campus in 2018. Together, this work has been grounded in a simple but powerful belief: students succeed when they feel a strong sense of belonging and care.

As I prepare to step back from my role as President/CEO of IEBC on July 1, 2026, I do so with immense gratitude and excitement for the future. I am pleased to continue serving our Caring Campus institutions in a half-time capacity, in the role of President/CEO Emeritus, leading the Caring Campus Network, Caring Campus Academy, and ongoing grant initiatives. I look forward to remaining connected to the remarkable faculty, staff, administrators, and partners who have made this work so impactful.

Thank you to all of our community colleges, universities, philanthropic partners who have made this work possible, and stakeholders for your commitment to improving the student experience and their success in higher education. Your vital work has improved countless lives and strengthened campuses in meaningful ways. The success of Caring Campus is a collective effort, and I am profoundly grateful for your trust and collaboration these past years.

I am proud to pass the role of CEO to Ken Sherwood and President to Dr. Bola King-Rushing, two exceptional leaders whose careers have been defined by their unwavering commitment to student success. Both Ken and Bola have played integral roles in Caring Campus for many years, serving as leaders at IEBC, and coaches for many of our Caring Campus institutions and helping them build cultures rooted in care.

I have complete confidence in their leadership and know Caring Campus will continue to grow and thrive under their guidance. Our mission remains strong, and the future is incredibly bright.

Serving IEBC and Caring Campus over the past 18 years has been one of the great privileges of my life. Thank you for your continued partnership, support, and commitment to students. I wish you well.

Sincerely,

Brad Phillips, Ph.D.
