President's Message

Starting Strong This Fall with Caring Campus

Dear Caring Campus Community,

With the new academic year approaching, this is the perfect time to go all in on the Caring Campus practices that foster student connection and success.

As you prepare for Welcome Weeks and other back-to-school events, please consider prioritizing Caring Campus behavioral commitments – learning and using students’ names, offering warm referrals, greeting students within 10 feet, practicing situational fairness, fostering cross-departmental awareness, and more. These simple yet powerful behaviors help ensure that every student feels seen, supported, and cared for both on and off campus.

Irvine Valley College staff welcome students back with a Welcome Week Resource Fair.

The new school year often brings new faces. To ensure that all employees – new and returning – are aligned in your college’s culture of care, please consider enrolling them in the Caring Campus Academy (CCA) this fall, beginning in September. This is a valuable opportunity to deepen commitment and consistency across your campus. Sign up now for our fall CCA cohort.

As you continue planning for the upcoming year, don’t forget to register for our Caring Campus Conference 2025: Building a National Culture of Care, taking place Nov. 12-14 in San Diego! We invite you to submit a presentation proposal by Saturday, Aug. 30 to join a dynamic group of presenters sharing actionable strategies that others can take back to their colleges. We’re also thrilled to welcome two nationally recognized keynote speakers, Dr. Vince Tinto and Dr. Peter Felten, whose insights will inspire and energize our shared work.

I want to thank our generous conference sponsors: Ascendium Education Group, Greater Texas Foundation, and the ECMC Foundation. Their support is helping make this inaugural conference a meaningful and memorable experience.

Hartnell College earned silver Caring Campus Certification, highlighting their efforts to foster a campus culture centered on connection, compassion, and support for all students.

We are also proud to host the first-ever Caring Campus Certification awards ceremony at the conference, recognizing colleges that have demonstrated their commitment to building a culture of care. Certification applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but those submitted later may miss the window for conference recognition. Apply today!

And don’t miss the opportunity to join the Caring Campus Network (CCN) at half the annual rate for the remainder of 2025. This special offer is designed to help colleges and universities access the full range of CCN benefits – including discounted conference registration, a robust database of proven strategies, engaging webinars, and access to a nationwide community of dedicated professionals committed to student success.

Thank you for your continued dedication to student success and Caring Campus. Connect with us today to learn more about how we can help your campus continue to build and nurture a culture of care.

Sincerely,

Brad Phillips, Ph.D.
