Caring Campus: A Powerful Response to Student Loneliness

Dear Caring Campus Community,

Several recent reports, including from our partner the Trellis Foundation, have highlighted the growing challenge of student loneliness. At a time when many students feel disconnected on campus, the work of Caring Campus is more important than ever.

Research shows that students thrive when they experience a strong sense of connection and belonging. Caring Campus helps create these environments, ensuring every student feels seen, supported, and welcomed.

One powerful Caring Campus strategy is the warm referral. When we walk a student to a building or department rather than simply pointing them in the right direction, we do far more than provide directions – we communicate care.

That brief walk becomes an opportunity to ensure a student reaches their destination, to learn their name, to hear their story, and to help meet an immediate need. These small moments often leave lasting impressions.

Yuba College creates a welcoming environment for students by embracing the warm referral, walking students to their destination rather than simply pointing in the right direction.

“Working in the tutoring center, I’ve had many students mention that they were personally walked by an employee to our building. You can see the relief in their faces from not getting lost and hear how much it meant to them that someone took the time to walk them across campus, even when it’s cold and rainy outside.”

One of our incredible funders, Greater Texas Foundation, recently released a report, “Innovation with Heart: How Texas Community Colleges Are Changing the Student Experience.” The report highlights Caring Campus as one of six innovative strategies transforming student success across Texas community colleges and showcases how institutions are lowering barriers, strengthening connections, and expanding opportunity for students statewide.
