Caring Campus California
The Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC) created Caring Campus based on research that shows students who feel more connected to their college are more likely to be retained, persist from semester to semester, and complete their academic goals.
The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) embraced the power of Caring Campus to support Guided Pathways statewide and the Vision for Success with funding for IEBC’s Caring Campus work with 18 colleges in 2018 and an additional 18 colleges in 2020.
As of the 2023-2024 year, the support of the CCCCO has allowed Caring Campus to be implemented at over 70 of California’s community colleges. The funding has empowered almost two-thirds of all California community colleges to be Caring Campuses over the next two years. The objective of IEBC’s Caring Campus program is to increase student retention and success in community colleges by creating and cultivating caring environments through the intentional inclusion of all staff in student success efforts.
“We are pleased to expand our partnership with IEBC’s Caring Campus program, integrating classified professional colleagues into student success strategies at 30 additional California Community Colleges,” said California Community Colleges Executive Vice Chancellor of Educational Services and Support Marty Alvarado. “Investing in this targeted support for our classified colleagues benefits all students and continues to be an important strategy for advancing the Vision for Success and Guided Pathways.”

Eva Bagg, president of Barstow Community College
When Eva Bagg learned about IEBC’s latest initiative, Caring Campus, she knew it would be a good fit for the college’s culture. Once the work was underway, Dr. Bagg received enthusiastic reviews. “(Staff) loved the homework – everyone is tired of committees and not getting things done. The framework was so structured you really can’t help but come out with behavioral changes.”

Kindred Murillo told IEBC the introduction of the Caring Campus directly benefits Southwestern College’s educational goals and objectives. “It provides the tools to our classified staff to be able to really achieve the actionable behaviors we’re asking for. So often, we (as educators) say we have goals. This program actually provides the tools and the coaching to help employees be and do – and I do mean DO – what their intent is,” said Dr. Murillo.

Irvine Valley College Celebrating Classified Staff and Caring Campus
“On March 22, Irvine Valley College held a contactless caring drive-thru for our IVC Classified Professionals. The event drew Classified from their off-site home office locations and those who remain on the campus supporting our remote operations. The drive thru was so greatly appreciated by our Classified as they saw their fellow colleagues and our Caring Campus team, meet our new president and vice president of student services for the first time (both hired remotely at start of the pandemic), receive swag bags and materials for our virtual professional development days (happening this week), receive recognition of our Caring Campus team’s great work with a presentation of the IEBC Caring Campus plaque, and some received their employee service pins for the year. It was a great day filled with so much care, love and excitement for our Classified Professionals.
